Stretch your Nest egg by cutting spending.

Retirees should pay as much attention to their expenses as they do to their investments.

Retirees and those preparing for retirement devote a great deal of time to nurture their investments. As well they should. But they often neglect the other side of the savings coin.If you spend too much ,it doesn't matter how well your investment perform.

Susan Hirshman,a former wealth strategist with J.P morgan Asset management in New York City, would like to see newer retirees obsess as much about their spending as they do about accumulating wealth."All I hear about is performance, performance, performance, and not enough about evaluation of lifestyle"says Hishman ,now a consultant to the financial-service industry.

When markets decline and inflation accelerates ,it's more important then ever before for those on the cusp of,or already in,retirement to create a realistic budget and rein in expenses.Spending too much in the early years ,especially in a down market ,increases the chances that you'll outlive your nest egg.

A widely accepted rule of thumb is that retirees should withdraw no more than 4% to 5% of the value of their portfolio during the first year ,with an adjustment for inflation each subsequent year. For many new retirees who are used to spending freely in their peak -earning years,it often comes as a surprise to find that a 1.5 million portfolio produces a frist year withdrawal of just 60.000 to 75.000.

Because they're not prepared fpr the new reality, many new retirees live beyond their means.A survey by Jp Morgan of 1.3 million participants in 401 (k) plans it manages found that the average investor withdrew more than 20% a year at or soon after retirement.a sure way to deplete your savings.

So how can you come up with a realistic retirement-spending plan?Where you can cut back on expenses without significantly altering your lifesstyle?Wite it down .Expersts are all over the board in guesstimating how much of your preretirement income you nedd to sustain your lifestyle in retirement. Some say 70%,some say 80%,and some warn that you may need more than 100% of your preretirement income after you leave work. You can get an idea of your livng expenses in retirement by fuguring our how much you're spending now and estimating how outflow will change once you leave the 9 to 5 life behind.Tracking your expenses also makes sense for current retirees.

There are many systems for scrutinizing your spending habits.Quicken and Microsoft Money remain the giants in budgeting software. For a quick snapshot of your spending, use the budgeting tool.

You should group spending by category-insurance,energy, car,and so forth. After the two months are up,Clyatt says figure out which categories are higher than you expected .If you're paying a lot for your phones,Internet and cable TV,can you find an all-in-one package ?"People mindlessly spend "he says .By becoming aware ,you can make choices that reflect your values and your needs.

Then figure out which categories are likely to decline after you leave work, such as commuting costs, and and which one should increase ,such as travel.People in retirment have more free time ,and with that free time comes more spending says howard Hook, a certified public acountant with Access Wealth planing in Roseland ,N.J.

nowe compare projected retirement expenses and projected income. For expenses that you expect will fall, see if you can make some cuts now and test drive your retirement budhet while you're still working.

Set extra aside. As part of your budget, consider the future costs of replacing big-ticket items, such as the water heater and car.By reserving the money in an investment account, you 'll be able to pay cash for the big bills in the future rather than payiong interest on a loan.Alos squeezing your spending now means you won't have to cancel a vacation when you need a new roof.

Slim down .You can probably make many small spending cuts without much pain.,cutting back on restaurant meals.Rising cost of food and fuel are taking a big bite from retirees. You can found ways to cut the costs of both.use the car only when it is necessary;eat less.you do not have to starve yourself, but by eating much smaller portion you can save. You do not have to order two meals for you and your wife at a restaurant to be satisfied. You can share the meal and you will not have to waste any food. You do not have to cut your hair every month if you ask the barber to cut it short. You do not have to pay the dry Cleaner every month if you live in a tropical climate:buy clothes that are washable and do not need to be dry cleaned.Chek the coupons in the newspapers and magazines you can save 20 to 30 dollars on your grocery bills each month.

Read for you from kiplinger's retirement report.
