Although this question is very important ,I don't think the haitians answer it.First of all to answer the question one should ask another question:Why is haiti the poorest country of this hemisphère?We must be honest with ourselves ;yes the overthrow of the duly elected president of haiti in 2003 by Canada, France and The United States is condemnable and illegal ,but haiti was poor long before the overthrow of Jean Bertrand Arisitde. As one members of the panel asked: " why an earthquake of the same magnitude hits other countries and the death toll is not as high in haiti?"before the earthquake there were millions of haitians who were livng in worst conditions than those who are living in the tents right now;therefore the haitian problems are more complexe than the earthquake that destoyed the capital and electing a government.

To solve the problems haitians must be honest in finding the roots of our miseries. We must solve the problem of deforestation which prevents the haitians peasants to live in their villages. We must find an alternative to charcoal in order for the pople to stop cutting the trees. It is obvious as president Preval himself puts it that the way we farm the lands can not sustain the lives of 10 millions people. Therefore it is imperative that our friends help us to modernize the agricultural sector of the economy. Why in the decade of 1946 to 1956 the country was progressing because at that time we were selling sugar, coton, sisal, coffee, kakako, bananas etc and the population was only 3 millions people.canada could help haiti by buying these products from haiti; by giving scholarship to our young people in its universities;by helping us control the birth rate. by building more hydro electric and solar plants in the country.by helping us reform our school sytems.By selling us the products we import form them such as medecines at discounted prices. The so called friends of haiti can help by producing what we need in the country. This policy will not only reduce the commercial deficit, but it will also decrease the unemployement rate which is one of the main causes of insecurity in the country. As one haitian put it: why is it in a country where there are so many things that need to be done there are so many people unemployed?.We know as president Roosevelt put it:"People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorship are made of.'haitians need jobs and a good education to produce the goods and services they need.

The international help failed because it was not used in the areas where it can make a difference;such as education, land reform, housing, health care, alternative energy, control of the birth rate, jobs creation, security, justice etc. They prefer to give us a few fishes instead of teaching us the way to fish.

" why an earthquake of the same magnitude hits other countries and the death toll is not as high in Haiti?"

Because the inimaginable magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale hit at 12 kms from the most densely populated region of the country.

It is like the difference of shooting somebody from 200 feet compared to a point blank blast.

It that same eathquake were to hit a faultline in the centre of New York's central park or the Mont Royal, the damage would have been worse than the one caused by the haitian goudougoudou.

According to your reasoning the method of construction in haiti has nothing to do with the number of people killed? The paraseismic method of constrcution that is used in Chile and japan has nothing to do with the relatively small number of people killed during two earthquakes of the same magnitude in these two countries? Why the capital was so overpopulated? What were the measures implemented by the government to prevent this tragedy despite the warnings of the haitian and french scientists?

You're doing a disfavor to the country by trying to absolve the haitian govenrment for its incompetency.;had such an earthquake hit havana I can assure you the death toll would be less .Read an article published on the nouvelliste site where Engineer Prèpetit is worring and complaining about the way construction is done as usual in haiti after the earthquake. To this day the government can not promulgate a construction code for the country.

Kote sa?
M ap pale de diferans ant 2 tranblemandtè Ayiti avèk Chili.
Di m si pa gen yon diferans ant tire yon nèg a boupotan epi tire l a 500 pye.

Lanpwen dedwanen gouvènman laa. Se pa de sa na p pale.
Sètènman moun ki lan bilding ki bati pou reziste seyis ap pi an sekirite.
Men pa vinn di okenn gouvènman nenpot kote kapab anpeche dega yon tranblemandtè.

Mande moun an Ayiti yo.

Fok amaterism lan fini an ayiti.
