Caricom agrees on preferential Haiti imports
By Stabroek

Trade Ministers yesterday agreed on the goods that Haiti will be able to export within the Single Market on a non-reciprocal preferential basis for three years.

According to a release from the Caricom Secretariat, an initial list comprising 42 items was agreed to after discussions at the 31st Ministerial Meeting of the Council For Trade and Economic Development (COTED) which finished yesterday in Georgetown. Haiti had made the request at the 30th COTED meeting in May and the ministers agreed to the request and CARICOM Heads of Government had endorsed the agreement.

Among the items agreed to are, paintings and drawings, peanut butter, corn flour, wooden table ware and kitchen ware, basketwork and cocoa beans. The concession becomes effective from January 1 next year. Member states will continue consultations towards approval of the additional items from the original list which Haiti submitted.

Antigua and Barbuda’s Senator Joanne Massiah, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Legal Affairs and Chair of the meeting, said that Haiti posed unique challenges. She said that in addition to supporting the temporary concessionary request, the Council should also map the technical assistance requirement of Haiti for their eventual participation in the CSME

First shipment of Haiti goods under CARICOM arrangements arrives in GrenadaBy Stabroek staff

The first consignment of goods from Haiti shipped under a temporary non-reciprocal preferential basis with other CARICOM member states arrived in St. George’s, Grenada last week.

Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General Trade and Economic Development, hailed the development as “a positive one by Haiti to become a part of CARICOM’s trading arrangements”, according to a press release from the CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen.

He also lauded the Community’s non-reciprocal access to sister member state Haiti as a sign of their commitment to Haiti’s reconstruction through private sector engagement.

According to the release, the shipment of items, including wall decorations, candle and napkin holders, and wind chimes, was made under the special arrangement agreed by the Council of Trade and Economic Development (COTED) last year and endorsed by CARICOM Heads of Government.

Haiti made the request for the arrangement in May last year at the Thirtieth Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) in Georgetown.

The concession became effective from January 1 this year and Haiti indicated that the date of implementation of the decision was March 14.

Haiti was preparing for participation in the Trade in Goods regime of the CARICOM Single Market (CSM) when the earthquake struck in January 2010, the release added.

This is a win win situation for the countries of the caricom.haiti will have more people in 2025 than all the carribean countries.it is imperative that the countries of the caraibean take advantage of this market by producing more goods for the people. When i go to a supermarket like bravo and I look at how many dominican food products that are selling in the United States I wonder why the haitian government can not understand the importance of the agricultural sector for the haitian economy. Why do our peasants have to go to the dominican republic to earn a living?
