Haitian Police Raid Orphanage for Abuse and Neglect
.PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - The Director of the Institute of Social Welfare, Jeanne Bernard Pierre and Commissioner Jean Gardy Muscadin, headed of the brigade of police to protect minors at the Son of God orphanage where children were found neglected as its leaders systematically diverted the aid received.

The Haitian authorities conducted the raid on Son of God (Children of God) located in Carrefour (southern suburb of Port-au-Prince) after the Institute of Social Welfare (IBESR) had been informed that children attending the facility were victims of abuse and maltreatment.

Accompanied by a magistrate, the Director of IBESR, Jeanne Bernard Pierre, Commissioner Jean Gardy Muscadin and the National Police of Haiti, intervened on the premises of the orphanage which was closed off.

The Institute of Social Welfare with the assistance of UNICEF transferred the children, malnourished living in unsanitary conditions to temporary residential communities. Jeanne Bernard Pierre said that parents of some of the children will be found and orphans will be relocated to foster homes.

Concern for several months by the deterioration of housing conditions in Sons of God, the American missionaries expressed relief. They pointed to the director of the orphanage for failing to adequately nourish the children and sold in-kind donations given to the institution.

The police had not yet traced the person in charge or their possible accomplices.
