Haiti’s Edouard aiming for the top again
Thursday December 18 2008

COLON CITY, Panama (CMC) – Haitian middleweight boxer Daniel Edouard is taking aim again at the top of world middleweight boxing after plunging out of the top frame in recent years.
Edouard had risen to Top-10 status three years ago but two losses in his last seven bouts downgraded his prospects.

He destroyed Panama’s champion Eduardo De La Cruz in a dramatic first round knockout last Saturday night to win the World Boxing Association (WBA) FedeLatin middleweight belt and declared his intentions to return to the top flight.

“Winning the WBA Fedelatin title is a step towards becoming a contender,” Edouard declared.

Known as “The Haitian Sensation”, Edouard had reeled off an 18-fight unbeaten record at the start of his pro career.

He captured the US Boxing Association (USBA) middleweight crown in August 2004 by stopping the American Willie Gibbs in four rounds but made a huge step up to challenge red hot title-prospect Jermain Taylor in his next bout in February 2005.

Taylor beat him in three rounds and would go on five months later to become undisputed world champion with a fabulous victory over the outstanding veteran Bernard Hopkins.

Edouard’s venture against Taylor was widely regarded at the time as an imprudent decision for the relatively inexperienced Haitian, who was still learning his craft.

Now 28 years old and under the management of Premium Boxing Promotions, including the Haitian Jacques Deschamps, Edouard is prepared to be more patient in his trek toward the top.

“This time I’m doing it the right way so when I get back to that contender level I will be ready,” he said.

Edouard looked good Saturday night as he pounded Cruz with pinpoint shots until the fight came to a crashing halt at 2:08 of the first round at Hotel Melia Panama Canal.

Edouard improved his ring record to 21 wins (12 knockouts) against two losses and two draws, and he was one of two Caribbean winners on that card.

The undefeated Jamaican boxer Nicholas Walters was also victorious, getting past Panama’s Alejandro Corrales on a unanimous points decision in their non-title featherweight bout.

With his latest win, the 23-year-old Walters is now 7-0 with five knockouts.
