It is with great concern that I listened to President Obama last night saying to a reporter :"I screw up"in regard to the nomination of Tom Daschle as Secretary of health and Human Services.Although the president is responsible for the nomination of the Secretaries who will serve in his government ,but it is also incumbent to these nominees to tell the truth.
I am very disappointed with Mr. Daschle's decision to withdraw his name at this late stage of the process and for saying that an editiorial of the new York Times helps him decide to withdraw his name for consideration after he had gone to the Senate to embarrass the President.Tom Daschle should know better. He is,after all, an ex member of Congress who knows how well his colleagues in the republican party scrutinize the nominees for different positions in the government ;How did he expect to be confirmed with such a scandal in his past?
But the most astonishing aspect of this scandal is the problem with the taxe code of the United sates.I do not think that Mr Daschle and The secretary of the tresury are crooks. They are two intelligent men who are confused by this taxe code. Last week it was a similar scandal that prevents Caroline kennedy from accepting the nomination to replace Hillary Clinton. If these smart people who are lawyers, bankers, accountants can not interpret the taxe code properly in order to avoid these shameful accusations of taxe cheat by the republicans how does the government expect the average american to interpret this complicated taxe code ?
I do not think that President Obama is responsible for the mistakes of grown men who should know better. The President of the United Sates was dupe by 2 men who have served their country in two of the higher positions of the government. One does not expect to hear that an ex President of the federal Bank of New York to be a taxe cheat. As for ex Senator Daschle his conduct is inexcusable for even if it was a honest mistake he should have informed the president about this problem.
