Very often we do not reach our self actualisation not because we don't have the potentiel or the capacity ,but rather because of the limitations we put on ourselves ,and the worst is that sometimes we try to impose these low self esteem and self hatred on others. No wonder with such a mentality that we have so few achievers in our country.I wonder how did a man like Edouard Mews realize his dreams in a country like haiti.I wonder if men like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet ,Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers could have achieve their fortunes and achievements if they were born and raised in Haiti or among haitians.
Just because you were poor; for haitians you do not suppose to have dreams of a better life. They say you have "folie grandeur "if you speak about owning a beautiful house, owning stocks in the stock market or write a piece in a different language you want to be an "intellectual",the same way that some afro americans criticize those who express temselves correctly in using proper english..But ask them to define the word "intellectual" most of them can not.For a haitian an intellectual in somebody who have finished high school,or somebody who can write a few french sentences correctly ,no matter the falsehood or incorrectness of his or her messages.
Sometimes it is your own friends or people you had the misfortune to encounter in your life longtime ago who tried to put a limitation on your dream.I remmeber when I arrived in the United States I confided to a haitian co-worker that the company that we were working for intends to send some of us to school to improve our productivity; He said :"we came here to eat ;at our age what can we learn?"note that both of us were in our late twenties.
These are the attitudes that prevent us from realizing our self actualisation. In the beginning of the 70's New York City had a program to rehabilitate old buildings in poor neighborhoods. The city was not only offering financing ,but also management help to repair these buildings. At the Borough of Manhattan Community College where I was a student ,a black afro american entrepreneur came to explain to us how the program works and what potentiel there is in these brownstones and old buildings in Manhattan , Brooklyn , Jamaica, all over the city. You could buy a building with a minimum down payment and you will get the financing to repair it.A Trinidadian carpenter I know begged me to buy a building in the Bronx, because that is what he was doing: buy old houses ,repair them and sell them for a profit.Because of the limitations I impose on myself ,because of self doubt I did not take advante of this opportunity. To these days I regret these opportunities that so many times I encountered in my life.It is to prevent the repetition of these mistakes by the youg generation of haitians that I write about them. But for the underdeveloped mind it is because I want to show off.
Although it is a little late now for me, I refuse to let the low self esteem ,the doubters put their limitations in my life. They do not know waht opoortunity you had ,if you did not win the lottery while you were out of their site.no ,you should not dream to have a beautiful house or to write in a different language because you were a little soldier in your youth, therefore you are condemned to be mediocre and poor all your life.People I have news for you ,this one is different you can not put your self hatred, low self esteem on him.He will do whatever he wants with his life.He will not tolerate your underdeveloped mind to create a complexe of inferiority in his attitude ;he will have a positive attitude for his self actualisation for he has seen people with less education than him accomplish miracles. His idols are not the pretentious, so called haitians intellectuals, but rather men like Thomas Edison, The Wright brothers, Warren Buffet, Bill gates, and all those men and women who have change the lives of their fellow human beings because of their intellingence, perseverance, and know how.
